Everything you need to know

3D Relief Wooden gift box There are glasses you fill, and there are glasses you watch fill up. The SOMMET 3D mountain whiskey glass belongs to the latter category: at the bottom of this clear blown-glass tumbler, a snowy mountain relief is sculpted into the material. As long as the glass is empty, the mountain remains subtle, almost frosted. Pour in a few centimeters of whiskey: the amber liquid hugs the valleys, highlights the ridges, and draws golden slopes around a summit that remains clear, like a mountain range at sunset. With an old-fashioned format of 200 ml, 70 mm in diameter by 73 mm in height, it fits perfectly in the hand and is suitable for sipping spirits neat, on the rocks, or in a short cocktail. Sold individually, it is presented in a light wood gift box with a lid, making it a ready-to-give gift for both the whiskey enthusiast and the mountain lover.

Blown glass and the art of interior relief

Blown glass is one of the oldest glassmaking techniques: molten glass, collected at the end of a blowpipe, is inflated with breath and then shaped, often in a mold. To achieve an interior relief like that of SOMMET, the bottom of the mold bears the recessed design of the mountain; the material presses against it and, after cooling, retains this 3D landscape captured in the thickness of the glass.

The visual effect is based on a simple principle of refraction: clear glass and a colored liquid do not bend light in the same way. When empty, the relief is barely visible. As soon as the whiskey fills the hollows, the contrast between the amber-bathed areas and the clearer ridges literally makes the mountain appear. The darker the spirit, the more the relief stands out; with a light-colored whiskey or eau-de-vie, the effect remains more subtle, almost glacial.

Golden hour at altitude

There are moments when the mountain changes its face. At the end of the day, when the sun descends behind the ridges, the snow takes on an amber hue, the valleys fill with warm shadows, and the peaks remain illuminated for a moment. Mountaineers call this the golden hour. It is exactly this image that SOMMET reveals at the bottom of your glass.

The ritual is almost contemplative: you open the wooden box, set the glass on the table, and pour slowly. The whiskey flows down the flanks of the massif, fills the valleys, and circles the peak. You swirl the glass to release the aromas, and the mountain seems to come to life under the light. Then you bring the glass to your lips, and the landscape is unveiled once more as the level drops.

This glass is intended for those who appreciate objects that tell a story: a memory of a hike, a chalet shared between friends, or a mountain pass crossed by bike. It transforms an ordinary tasting into a mini-journey, to be savored without haste and in moderation.

Serving and revealing the mountain

1
Prepare the glass: take it out of its box, rinse with clear water, and wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth for perfect transparency.
2
Pour slowly: serve a reasonable dose of whiskey, letting the liquid run along the side; the mountain appears as the bottom fills.
3
Choose your style: enjoy the whiskey neat, add a few drops of water to open the aromas, or a large ice cube for an on the rocks version.
4
Maintain and store: wash the glass by hand with warm water, dry it, and place it back in its wooden box, protected from impacts.

SOMMET compared to other whiskey glasses

Criteria SOMMET (3D relief) Classic tumbler Tulip tasting glass
Shape Old fashioned, straight edges Old fashioned, straight edges Short stem, tapered rim
Capacity 200 ml Variable Generally smaller
Ideal use Whiskey neat, on ice, short cocktail Whiskey on ice, short cocktail Aromatic analysis of whiskey neat
Visual effect Mountain revealed by liquid Neutral Neutral
Aroma concentration Moderate Moderate High
Presentation Light wood box Usually no box Variable

Good to know: the relief is formed within the glass itself, at the bottom of the tumbler; it is neither glued-on decor nor a print. The effect is more pronounced the more colored the drink: whiskey, cognac, amber rum, or even iced tea for a non-alcoholic version. The glass is sold individually; to put together a pair or a set, order the desired number of pieces. Bottles and accessories visible in some staging photos are not provided.

Tasting tip: to fully enjoy the relief, serve about two to three centimeters of whiskey: the liquid then covers the valleys while leaving the summit emerging. If you like your whiskey chilled, prefer a large ice cube or a whiskey stone, which dilutes little or not at all and interferes less with the landscape than many small ice cubes.

Frequently asked questions

How does the mountain appear in the glass?

The interior base of the glass is sculpted in relief: a mountain with distinct ridges is formed into the material during manufacturing. When empty, this transparent relief is barely discernible. When you pour a colored liquid like whiskey, it fills the hollows of the relief and contrasts with the lighter ridges: the landscape then appears clearly, with amber valleys and an emerging peak. It is a purely optical phenomenon, related to the difference in color and refraction between the glass and the drink. The darker the spirit, the more spectacular the effect.

What is the capacity of the glass?

The SOMMET glass has a capacity of 200 ml, with a diameter of 70 mm (68 mm opening) and a height of 73 mm. This is the classic size of an old-fashioned or tumbler glass, ideal for tasting. In practice, you never fill it completely: a dose of whiskey generally occupies the first few centimeters, which leaves space for an ice cube, a few drops of water, and especially for swirling the liquid to release its aromas. This size is also suitable for short cocktails served over ice, or an amber spirit like aged rum or cognac.

Is the glass sold individually or as a pair?

The SOMMET glass is sold individually, presented in its light wood box with a lid. If you would like a pair for a moment shared, or a small set for hosting, simply indicate the desired quantity when ordering: each glass is then delivered in its own box. The bottles, carafes, trays, or other accessories visible in some atmospheric photos are used only for staging and are not provided. The wooden coaster appearing in some visuals is also not guaranteed: only the glass and its box make up the item.

Can other drinks besides whiskey be served in it?

Of course. The old-fashioned format is suitable for many amber spirits: cognac, armagnac, aged rum, calvados, bourbon. The mountain effect works with any colored drink and becomes particularly successful with warm hues. The glass also lends itself to short cocktails served over ice. For a non-alcoholic version, iced tea, apple juice, or an amber soda reveal the relief just as well and allow you to enjoy the object at any time. With water or a colorless drink, the mountain remains subtle and takes on a frosted look, closer to a glacier than a sunset.

How should the glass be maintained?

We recommend hand washing with warm water and a little dish soap, using a soft sponge or a bottle brush to reach the crevices of the relief. The manufacturer does not specify dishwasher compatibility: hand washing remains the safest solution to preserve the transparency of the glass and avoid impacts between pieces. Rinse with clear water, then dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth to avoid limescale marks. Avoid abrasive products and sudden temperature variations. Then store the glass in its wooden box, protected from dust.

Can ice cubes or whiskey stones be used?

Yes. If you like your whiskey chilled, prefer a large ice cube or an ice sphere, which melt more slowly and dilute the spirit less than many small ice cubes. Whiskey stones are another option, as they cool without any dilution. In any case, place them gently at the bottom of the glass rather than letting them drop, so as not to mark or weaken the relief. Keep in mind that a large ice cube masks part of the mountain: to fully enjoy the visual effect, enjoy at least the first sip without ice.

Is it a good gift?

It is, in fact, one of its main purposes. Presented in a light wood box with a lid, SOMMET is ready to be given as is, without additional wrapping. It is particularly appealing to whiskey enthusiasts curious about original objects, mountain, hiking, or ski fans, and anyone who enjoys hosting. It is suitable for birthdays, Father's Day, housewarmings, or a thoughtful corporate gift. For an even more striking effect, offer two so the recipient can share the tasting, or pair it with a bottle chosen according to their tastes and other accessories from the Cellar Master.
