No — you can use distilled water alone. However, a 50/50 propylene glycol + distilled water solution is recommended because it naturally regulates humidity toward 70% RH, preventing over-humidification. Both options are compatible with Oasis foam.
How do I prepare the Recta Premium before its first use?
Activation is simple. Moisten the Recta Premium foam with distilled water or a 50/50 propylene glycol solution, pouring gradually until it is well saturated without excess. Let it rest for a few minutes, then carefully wipe off any excess: no liquid should bead up, as liquid in direct contact with cigars can stain wrappers or encourage mold. Then, install the humidifier in your humidor and let the atmosphere stabilize before placing your cigars inside. Never use tap water: limescale clogs the foam, and chlorine alters the aromas.
How often should I refill the Recta Premium?
The frequency depends on several factors: the size of your humidor, its seal, the number of cigars it contains, the frequency of opening, and the ambient room humidity. In practice, refilling every one to four weeks is common, more often in winter when heating dries out the air. The best indicator remains a hygrometer: as soon as the humidity drops below 65%, it is time to re-moisten the foam. Aim for a range of 65 to 72%. Avoid overloading the humidifier: too much humidity is as harmful as too little.
Is the Recta Premium suitable for my humidor?
With its 13 × 5 cm format, the Recta Premium fits into the majority of desktop cigar humidors. Before ordering, simply check that your humidor provides a space of at least 13 cm long, under the lid or along a wall. For a large-volume humidor or one that is opened frequently, two humidifiers placed on opposite sides ensure more uniform humidification. In any case, the hygrometer remains your best guide: if the humidity struggles to reach 65% despite regular refilling, it is a sign that a second humidifier would be useful.
Where should I place the Recta Premium in my humidor?
Ideally, place the humidifier high up, for example under the lid or at the top of a wall: the humid air will then diffuse downward and envelop all the cigars. Ensure that it is not in direct contact with the wrappers to avoid any staining or overly damp areas. Leave a slight gap around it to promote air circulation. Place your hygrometer at a distance from the humidifier, at cigar level, to get a reading representative of the entire humidor rather than an artificially high value.
What is the difference between the Gold and Silver finishes?
The difference is purely aesthetic. Both finishes share the same ABS casing, the same absorbent foam, the same stainless steel elements, and the same 13 × 5 cm dimensions: the humidification efficiency is strictly identical. The Gold finish matches varnished wood humidors with gold hinges and locks. The Silver finish adds a more contemporary touch to humidors made of glass, carbon fiber, or those with metal hardware. Simply choose the one that best harmonizes with your humidor.
How do I maintain the Recta Premium and when should I replace the foam?
Proper maintenance ensures healthy long-term humidification. Use exclusively distilled water or a propylene glycol solution: limescale from tap water gradually clogs the foam and reduces its efficiency. Inspect the humidifier with each refill. If the foam hardens, becomes discolored, gives off an unusual odor, or shows the slightest trace of mold, it is time to replace it rather than trying to clean it.
