Frequently Asked Questions

How do I soak the Xander 200 crystals?
Immerse the crystals in distilled water for 10 minutes — they should expand fully. Drain any excess free water. Place into the humidor. The crystals will gradually release moisture for several weeks.
How often should I rehydrate the Xander 200?
The crystals release their moisture gradually over several weeks. The exact frequency depends on the size of your humidor, the number of cigars, how often it is opened, and the ambient humidity: in winter, heating significantly accelerates drying. Two simple indicators will guide you. First, the hygrometer: as soon as the humidity drops below 65%, it is time to rehydrate. Next, the appearance of the crystals: when they shrink and harden, they have released most of their water. Re-immerse them in distilled water for about ten minutes, drain, then replace the humidifier in your humidor.
Why use only distilled water?
The acrylic polymer crystals of the Xander 200 are designed to work exclusively with distilled water. Propylene glycol solution, designed for sponge humidifiers, is not meant for these types of crystals: it alters their function and reduces their ability to absorb and release moisture. Tap water should also be avoided: its limescale settles in the crystals and its chlorine can impart odors to your cigars. Distilled water, available in supermarkets or pharmacies, guarantees pure and neutral humidification that preserves the natural aromas of your collection.
Is the Xander 200 suitable for my humidor size?
The Xander 200 is sized for humidors of approximately 70 cigars, which are standard desktop humidors of 50 to 70 units. It also works in smaller humidors; simply monitor your hygrometer for the first few days to ensure that the humidity does not exceed the ideal 65 to 72% zone. For a larger humidor, a single humidifier may be insufficient: in that case, you can place two on either side for more even humidification. If in doubt about your configuration, our customer service will be happy to help you choose the most suitable solution.
Where should I place the Xander 200 in my humidor?
For even distribution, place the humidifier preferably at a high position, for example on an upper tray or near the lid: moist air naturally distributes downwards and wraps around all the cigars. Ensure the crystals are never in direct contact with the cigar wrappers to avoid staining or overly damp areas. Leave a slight space around the Xander 200 to promote air circulation, and keep it away from the hygrometer, which might otherwise show an artificially high reading. After installation, let the humidor stabilize for a few hours before placing your cigars inside.
How do I maintain the Xander 200 over time?
Maintenance is minimal. Use exclusively distilled water for each rehydration to prevent limescale deposits in the crystals. With every refill, take the opportunity to inspect the humidifier: the crystals should remain translucent and odorless. If you notice discoloration, an unusual odor, or any trace of mold, it is better to replace the crystals rather than trying to clean them. Never use detergents or household cleaners: their residues would be absorbed by your cigars. Simply wipe the plastic and metal casing with a soft, dry cloth.
Do I need a hygrometer with the Xander 200?
It is highly recommended. The Xander 200 aims for a humidity of about 70%, but the actual result in your humidor depends on its volume, its seal, the number of cigars, and room conditions. Only a hygrometer tells you if you are within the ideal 65 to 72% zone and when to rehydrate the crystals. An electronic model offers a quick and accurate reading, often accompanied by temperature; an analog model provides a more classic touch. In either case, check its accuracy from time to time using the salt test.
