Why Mode 4 is recommended by default: Mode 4 applies a very gentle cycle for the mechanism—2 minutes of rotation followed by 18 minutes of pause, alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise. It is not suitable for quartz (battery-powered) watches, solar watches, manual-wind watches (which are wound by the crown only), nor smartwatches. Placing these types of watches in a winder is unnecessary and can, in some cases, damage the movement.
