White stroke on blackHand-painted oil5 models · 15 sizes

A wide brush loaded with white, a black canvas, and one sole watchword: movement. The Modern Rhythms series brings together five compositions where the white line traces its path across a deep black background, like chalk on a school blackboard or light ink on dark paper. At times it repeats in regular vertical stripes, at others it curls into a large loop, and sometimes it becomes light and scribbled. Each model has its own tempo: "Rhythm in Stripes" with its cadence of bands crossed by an arc, "Intertwined Paths" with its intersecting lines, Curved Elegance with its majestic figure-eight, "Geometric Harmony" with its cutouts, and Minimalist Flow with its free-flowing strokes. These oil paintings are handmade to order in fifteen sizes ranging from 40 x 60 cm to 150 x 200 cm, with a custom option available. A series designed for contemporary and industrial interiors where black and white are already at home.

All models share the same price list, from €89.90 for 40 x 60 cm to €679.90 for 150 x 200 cm. The photos showing a canvas with black shapes on an ecru background, presented in various living rooms, do not correspond to any of the five models on this page: only the thumbnails of each specific model are definitive.

The technique

The line as the subject

In Modern Rhythms, there is nothing to look at but the line itself: its thickness, its speed, the way it begins and ends. On the most graphic models, such as Intertwined Paths or Curved Elegance, the white is applied in wide, opaque bands; on Minimalist Flow, it becomes a thin, almost nervous stroke that reveals the hand's hesitation. The edges are never perfectly clean, and that is intentional: one can see the passage of the brush.

The choice of a black background reverses our habits, since we usually draw in dark on light. This reversal gives the lines a particular luminosity: they seem to advance toward us, while the black recedes and creates depth. Oil paint, opaque and covering, allows for a dense white that is not grayed out by the background.

Black and white, energetic version

Black and white is often associated with calm and restraint. Modern Rhythms shows another facet, more vivid and musical: the repetition of stripes evokes a regular beat, the loop of Curved Elegance a continuous motion, and the strokes of Minimalist Flow an improvisation. On a wall, these canvases act as a visual score that paces the space.

Our visuals place them in living rooms with light gray walls, next to anthracite gray modular sofas, arched doors, or light curtains. In these minimalist decors, the large black block provides a foundation for the room, and the white echoes the walls. Hung in pairs or threes—for example, "Rhythm in Stripes" and "Intertwined Paths"—they create a very assertive graphic wall.

From selection to hanging

1
Choose your tempo: regular with stripes, sinuous with the loop, or spontaneous with Minimalist Flow.
2
Assess the room's lighting: a large black background is appreciated best in a bright or well-lit space.
3
Select the size from the fifteen available formats or request custom dimensions.
4
Stretch the canvas on a frame, then hang it with a slight clearance above the furniture.

Five models, five styles

Model Line type Black portion Effect
Rhythm in Stripes Vertical bands + arc Half Regular cadence
Intertwined Paths Wide strokes, right angles Dominant Labyrinth, sign
Curved Elegance Large continuous loop Dominant Fluidity, scale
Geometric Harmony Cutouts and arcs Minimal, white background Balance
Minimalist Flow Thin, free strokes Very dominant Lightness, spontaneity
On-demand creation: your canvas is painted by the artist after receipt of the order. As the lines are drawn freehand, their exact thickness and trajectory will differ slightly from the photos. This is the guarantee of having a unique work, at the cost of a preparation time before shipping.
If you are hesitating with Monochrome Abstraction: this other series in our store plays on large black and cream shapes that interlock; Modern Rhythms, however, highlights the white line on a black background. Choose the former for a softer ambiance, the latter for more dynamism.

A gift with a graphic spirit

For a design lover, a musician, a black and white photographer, or a young couple furnishing a loft, Modern Rhythms is a striking gift idea. "Curved Elegance," with its loop evoking infinity, is particularly well-suited as a wedding or anniversary present.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the five models?
Rhythm in Stripes aligns black and white vertical bands, crossed by a large white arc that breaks the regularity. Intertwined Paths traces wide white paths that intersect at right angles, like a labyrinth or an ideogram. Curved Elegance displays a single white loop in the shape of an eight. Geometric Harmony reverses the trend with a more white background cut by black shapes, arcs, and a crescent. Finally, Minimalist Flow allows thin, free strokes to run over the black for a spontaneous sketch effect.
Won't a painting with a black background darken my room?
It all depends on the surface and the light. In a bright room with white or light gray walls, a black background creates an elegant anchor point and brings out the ambient brightness. If your room is small or poorly lit, choose a medium format or the Geometric Harmony model, which is predominantly white. Rhythm in Stripes, which alternates black and white in almost equal parts, is also a good compromise. Very black models, like Minimalist Flow, express themselves fully on a large, well-lit wall.
Can several models from the series be combined?
Yes, and that is one of the great strengths of Modern Rhythms. The five canvases share the same black and white palette and spirit, allowing you to compose a coherent diptych or triptych. Combine, for example, Rhythm in Stripes and Curved Elegance to play on the opposition of straight and curved lines, or three identical formats side by side in a long hallway. For a harmonious ensemble, keep the same format with a regular spacing of about 5 to 10 cm between canvases, and align their top edges.
What format to choose for a living room?
Above a sofa, the canvas should occupy about two-thirds of its width. For a three-seater sofa, the 100 x 140, 100 x 150, or 120 x 160 cm formats work well. On a high, open wall, dare to use the 150 x 200 cm: the black and white contrast then takes on an almost architectural dimension. For an entrance or an office, a 60 x 90 or 70 x 100 cm is sufficient. Do not hesitate to mark out the placement with masking tape before ordering to visualize the footprint precisely.
Is the frame included in the delivery?
No. The thin frames visible in some photos are for presentation only. The canvas is shipped without frame or stretcher bars and must be stretched on a wooden frame before hanging, which any framer can easily do. For this series, two options work particularly well: leaving the canvas without a frame, with the edges painted black, for a very contemporary gallery effect, or choosing a thin black floating frame that extends the background. Gold or light wood frames are more difficult to match with the strict black and white.
Why do some photos show a different composition?
Several visuals in the gallery show a canvas with large black shapes on an ecru background, staged in different living rooms. This composition is not part of the five models offered here. To know exactly what you are ordering, rely on the thumbnail associated with each model when you select it: Rhythm in Stripes, Intertwined Paths, Curved Elegance, Geometric Harmony, or Minimalist Flow. If in doubt, contact us before validating your cart, and we will confirm the visual corresponding to your choice.
Is a custom size possible?
Yes, all compositions can be made in a specific dimension on request to adapt to a wall, a nook, or a panoramic format. Send us the desired size and the chosen model: we will indicate the feasibility and price. When the proportions change, the artist adapts the composition—for example, by lengthening the stripes or widening the loop—while respecting the spirit of the model. The delivery time remains that of a made-to-order painting, increased by the drying time necessary before shipping.
