Cigar cabinet, how does it work?
Owning beautiful cigars is a pleasure, but knowing how to store them is an art. To preserve the aromas and elasticity of your tobacco leaves, using appropriate equipment is essential. Before diving into the technical details of humidification, don't hesitate to discover our selection of humidors designed to combine aesthetics and performance. Understanding how your future cigar box works is the first step to becoming a true enthusiast.
What is a cigar humidor for?
Unlike a simple storage box, a humidor is a controlled environment designed to recreate ideal storage conditions. It acts as a true microclimate, allowing for a precise balance between temperature and humidity.
This microclimate reproduces the natural conditions of producing countries like Cuba or the Dominican Republic. Without this controlled environment, cigars quickly lose their organoleptic properties, especially their complex aromas and homogeneous combustion.
Controlled storage also allows for cigar aging, gradually improving its aromatic richness.
This balance is essential to preserve the aromas, texture, and burning quality of cigars over time.

Why is humidity control essential?
Cigars are made of natural tobacco leaves, which are very sensitive to humidity variations.
Humidity directly influences the internal structure of the cigar. A well-preserved cigar maintains a flexible texture, slow combustion, and faithful aroma restitution.
- Too dry environment: cigars become brittle, burn too quickly, and lose their aromas.
- Too humid environment: they swell, burn poorly, and can develop mold.
Conversely, an incorrect humidity level can cause irregular combustion, difficult draw, and loss of essential tobacco oils.
The ideal rate is between 65% and 72% relative humidity.
Ideal temperature for storing cigars
In addition to humidity, temperature plays a fundamental role in preservation. The ideal range is between 16°C and 20°C.
Too high a temperature promotes the development of pests and alters the tobacco structure. Conversely, too low a temperature slows down the natural aging of the cigar.
Essential elements of a good storage system
- Spanish cedar wood interior
- Reliable humidification system
- Precise hygrometer

The role of Spanish cedar wood
Spanish cedar is known for its natural humidity regulating properties. It absorbs excess humidity and releases it when the air becomes too dry.
It also has natural antifungal properties and helps repel certain tobacco pests.
Its subtle fragrance also enhances the tasting experience by accompanying the aging of cigars.
Before any use, it is essential to prepare your humidor to stabilize the internal environment.
This seasoning operation is important, so we invite you to consult our dedicated article before any first use: "How to properly prepare a cigar humidor?"

The Humidifier, what is it?
It is the main accessory used to maintain humidity in the storage environment. After being properly prepared during the seasoning stage and then filled with cigars, the humidifier will be the main supplier of humidity for your storage system.
Therefore, it will need to be regularly checked and refilled with demineralized water as needed to keep your cigars plump and burning slowly.
There is a wide variety of humidifiers:
- Sponges: This is the "historical" and oldest humidification system. However, it requires more regular maintenance because it increases the risk of bacterial contamination. This is why it is essential to humidify it with distilled water or with a propylene glycol solution (50% distilled water/50% propylene glycol).
- Floral Foam: You've all seen them, these green foam blocks used to hold flower stems in bouquets. They have the particularity of retaining a lot of water and gradually releasing it. Be careful, they also absorb cigar aromas, which is why they should be replaced at least once a year.
- Crystal Gel: Presented in the form of small beads, this gel has been specially designed for cigar preservation. Capable of retaining up to 500 times its weight in water and pre-treated with propylene glycol, this water will be released into the air of your cigar humidor to maintain the correct humidity level. Preparing the gel is easy, just soak it in distilled water to activate it (repeat this every 2 to 4 weeks). Lifespan: between one and two years, after which it will need to be replaced.
- Silica Beads: This is an everyday product that we no longer even notice. These beads are the ones found in those small paper sachets when buying shoes, furniture, etc. Capable of retaining up to 40 times their weight in water, they have similar properties to Spanish cedar wood. They can absorb but also release humidity. Like all humidifiers, they are activated with distilled water and recharged every 2 to 4 weeks. Extra-long lifespan: between three and six years, after which they will need to be replaced.
- Humidipak: This is the Nespresso capsule of humidifiers, ready-made, it comes in the form of a mixture of water and salt wrapped in a membrane with bidirectional action (release and absorption). Like coffee capsules, there is the possibility of choosing your pack based on the humidity level.
Lifespan: 2 to 3 months.
- Electronic Humidifier: Technology is everywhere, even in the ancient art of cigar preservation. A sensory humidity sensor triggering electronic release, this is the ultimate humidifier. It needs to be refilled monthly with distilled water. Theoretical lifespan: immortal.

The hygrometer: precision control
The hygrometer precisely measures the humidity level.
- Analog: simple and traditional
- Digital: more precise and reactive
A poorly calibrated hygrometer can lead to improper humidity management. Regular checks are therefore recommended.

Good practices for storing cigars
- Maintain stable humidity between 65% and 72%
- Maintain a constant temperature
- Avoid direct light exposure
- Regularly check instruments
- Do not overfill the box to allow for good air circulation

Going further in cigar preservation
A good understanding of the fundamentals is essential, but the choice of equipment remains crucial to ensure optimal conditions in the long term.

FAQ – Cigar Storage
What is the ideal humidity level?
The recommended rate is between 65% and 72% to preserve aromas and combustion.
Why use Spanish cedar?
Cedar naturally regulates humidity and protects cigars against pests.
Should the humidor be prepared before use?
Yes, this helps stabilize the environment and prevents the wood from absorbing humidity from the cigars.
How often should humidity be checked?
Ideally once a week to ensure optimal preservation.
